Former Bertelsmann executive Gary Wang, the CEO of Chinese online-video distribution platform, looks to turn itself into a sizable media company through acquisitions. In a crowded landscape of big media conglomerates constantly trying to get into the Internet's video industry, Wang sees Bertelsmann's approach of targeted acquisitions as the way to survive.

Open source projects are proliferating in the cloud, growing 70% from 2008 to 2009, according to an analysis made public Monday by Black Duck Software.  Aimed at enabling enterprise IT application development for cloud computing, some 400 projects specifically associated with cloud computing were found in Black Duck’s study. The firm provides products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software.

Expanding its push into the mobile space, video ad network Tremor Media said Tuesday it will offer HTML5 support for its interactive video ad units. The HTML5 format for publishing and delivering ad-supported Web video has been championed in particular by Apple Inc. as an alternative to the Adobe's pervasive Flash technology. The company has all but banned the use of Flash on the iPhone, iPad and other Apple devices on the grounds that the latest version of the HTML programming language provides superior performance and reliability.

Optaros, an ecommerce solution provider, will host "A New Approach to Metrics for Magento Ecommerce" on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at its Boston headquarters. This is the latest event for the newly created New England Magento Meetup group. It will feature information and discussions regarding Magento best practices and ecommerce analytics, as well as serve as a networking event for Boston-area Magento developers and users.
