Through Riese & Others, Phillip’s focus is on providing strategic consulting, board and advisory services to enterprises globally with a particular passion for growth companies, primarily those disrupting the financial services industry.
He brings almost 30 years of executive and operating experience to the table, combined with an additional 20 years of working with some of the most innovative, disruptive, rapidly growing and successful start up and growth companies and their management teams around the world.
Over the last 20 years, Phillip has served on a number of public and private company boards, and today is a board member of public companies: Flywire (FLYW) and Remitly (RELY) and private companies: Array, Betterment, Cross River, Mpower, Perch and Relay Network. He is an adviser to a number of private company CEOs and venture funds globally. And he serves as a board member of Accion, a not-for-profit dedicated to global financial inclusion.
Prior to the formation of RIESE & OTHERS, he spent 18 years at American Express in a variety of positions, and, for the ultimate 8 years, served as the president of the Consumer Card Group and chairman of American Express Centurion Bank. Before American Express, he had sequentially been a division executive at Chase Manhattan Bank, responsible for their Merchant Services business, and a partner of M.C. Geffen and Associates, a consulting firm in South Africa.
Phillip is a Textile Engineer, earning a bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Leeds University in England, an MBA from the University of Cape Town in South Africa and a Master of Science degree from MIT's Sloan School of Management.
He and his wife Tracey live in Brooklyn, New York.
