General Catalyst is excited to welcome several of our peers across the investment ecosystem and technology industry to Responsible Innovation Labs. RI Labs also published their charter for building companies around five pillars of responsible innovation. We believe this is an important step in building a movement that guides the next wave of innovation.
At GC, our mission is to invest in powerful, positive change that endures. We believe the best way to realize this mission is through a deep commitment to Responsible Innovation. For us, Responsible Innovation is the framework for thinking about how to build next generation, market-leading companies that are engineered - from the outset - for exceptional financial and societal returns.
This belief drives our approach to company building, which is:
1. Intentional: We believe in foresight, not hindsight – especially when it comes to anticipating and managing unintended consequences.
2. Inclusive: Considering all stakeholders, at inception and key moments of inflection.
3. Impactful: Creating compelling business and societal cases.
Over the years, we have begun the work of deeply integrating Responsible Innovation across everything we do. Our Health Assurance thesis is a great example of Responsible Innovation in action as we partner with all stakeholders to move the healthcare industry from a "sick care" system to a proactive Health Assurance system that helps people stay well, bends the cost curve, and makes quality care more affordable and accessible to all. Similarly, our vision for the stakeholder-aligned enterprise lays out a roadmap for how stakeholders across the enterprise -- employees, customers, partners, and shareholders -- are all going to play a key role in shaping the future of business, and society.
This commitment to Responsible Innovation has given us the unique privilege of partnering with industry shaping companies and founders such as Warby Parker, CityBlock Health, Multiverse, Guild Education and more. We have also applied this to our company creation efforts in cases like Transcarent, Commure, Homeward Health, and more.
We are still in the early innings of this journey, and now with many more of our peers, institutional investors, and founders, look forward to building a community as part of RI Labs. Over the coming weeks and months, we aim to create best practices and standards, form networks of peer groups, build case studies and practical tools that will allow us all to build the defining companies of this decade and the next.
